Born in Forlimpopoli, Italy, in 1982, Martino Raggi grew up as the son of sculptor Andrea Raggi, developing an early familiarity with working wood and stone. He graduated from Cremona’s Antonio Stradivari violin-making school in 2002, studying under Maurizio Tadioli, Ezio Scarpini and Claudio Amighetti. He subsequently spent approximately three years in Massimo Negroni’s workshop, refining his skills in instrument construction, varnishing, setup and restoration. From 2005, he also regularly sought guidance from Simeone Morassi. Raggi makes violins, violas and cellos inspired primarily by classical Cremonese models, while also drawing on the traditions of other Italian schools. His approach places particular emphasis on the selection of well-seasoned materials and the acoustic qualities of each instrument.
