Built on Listening
-
Fifth String’s mission is to help every musician find an instrument that truly complements their sound, regardless of the name on its label, the reputation of its maker, or its price point. Serving students, professionals, collectors, and institutions, Fifth String offers a thoughtful process of discovery through carefully matched selections, performance trials, expert guidance, and comparisons across makers and price ranges. Beyond finding exceptional instruments, Fifth String aims to connect musicians with sponsors who can provide access to instruments they might not otherwise have—supporting artistic careers and helping sustain the art of music for generations to come.
-
At Fifth String, finding the right instrument is a personal and carefully guided process. We begin by understanding each musician’s preferences, playing style, and goals before selecting suitable instruments across different makers and price points. Through performance trials and expert guidance, we listen for tone, projection, colour, and the natural connection between player and instrument, helping each musician find an instrument that truly feels and sounds right. -
Fifth String was founded by Juilliard-trained cellist Brendan Goh, inspired by his belief that an instrument is a musician’s most important artistic partner. Drawing on years of performing alongside exceptional musicians, Brendan created Fifth String to help players find instruments based on sound, character, and connection, not simply the name on the label. Today, Fifth String brings together a trained ear, personal guidance, and a commitment to supporting musicians at every stage of their journey.

Fifth String brings a musician’s perspective to the world of fine string instruments. Founded in Vienna by Juilliard-trained cellist Brendan Goh, the business grew from a belief that choosing an instrument should begin with the player—not simply the reputation of a maker or the name printed on a label.
Drawing on his experience as a performer, Brendan approaches every instrument through its sound, response, projection and range of tonal colour. Just as importantly, he considers how naturally it responds to the individual musician and whether it gives them the freedom to express their own artistic voice.
Fifth String offers personal consultations, carefully selected comparisons and private trials in Vienna. Musicians are encouraged to experience instruments in the settings that matter most—in lessons, rehearsals, concert halls and at home—before making a decision. This considered process allows each instrument to be evaluated not only for its craftsmanship and history, but for the musical possibilities it offers its next player.
Alongside helping musicians find instruments and bows, Fifth String works discreetly with owners who wish to sell or consign their instruments. Every introduction is handled with personal attention, honest communication and respect for both the instrument and the people connected to it.
The purpose of Fifth String is not simply to complete a transaction. It is to create lasting connections between exceptional instruments and the musicians who can bring them to life.
